A measurement team led by the Hunan Society of Agronomy with experts from the
China National Rice Research Institute and Wuhan University recorded 530.4 kg
per mu from a large-scale hybrid rice seed-production demonstration plot in
Wuyang town, Suining County, Shaoyang, Hunan — the first reported
seed-production yield to exceed 1,000 jin per mu. The plot used the super-rice
hybrid Shuangliang You 138. China’s hybrid rice planting area remains above 200
mln mu; cumulative area promoted exceeded 10 bln mu by 2025. High seed costs and
long-running seed-production yields of around 160 kg/mu have been identified as
a major constraint on the sector’s sustainable development.
