Based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, The Economist estimates that since the launch of ChatGPT, AI infrastructure-related industries such as electrical contracting, HVAC, utilities construction, commercial buildings, and electrical equipment manufacturing have added approximately 320,000 jobs compared to the overall hiring trend. Meanwhile, professional positions such as engineers, software developers, and data scientists have added approximately 730,000 jobs compared to the trend. Together, these figures constitute an estimate of "over 1 million AI-related jobs." While back-office administrative and customer service positions are under pressure, data center infrastructure and high-skilled jobs are expanding, indicating that AI has not yet caused a contraction in employment across the entire economy.
