Iran has signaled a willingness to escalate its conflict with the United States. Following its initial attack on a U.S. warship, senior Iranian leaders have issued increasingly strongly worded warnings in recent days.
Faced with mounting economic pressure and concerns about its waning control over the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian leadership is adopting a more aggressive strategy. The U.S. naval blockade has virtually prevented Iran from exporting oil, the country's primary source of revenue.
Analysts say this situation increases the risk of recent conflicts escalating into a full-blown war. Farzan Sabet, an Iran analyst at the Higher Institute for International and Development Studies at the University of Frankfurt in Geneva, stated, "How to regain the initiative? By escalating the situation." He indicated that Iran is likely to attempt to escalate military confrontation while avoiding a full-blown war. He added, "This would undoubtedly cause huge losses, but at the same time, Iran hopes to use this to push up global oil prices or even close the Strait of Hormuz completely again."
