Trump has pledged to send $5,000 checks to American adults if Republicans win the midterm elections. Kent Smetters, head of budget modeling at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, estimates that a full rollout would cost approximately $1.35 trillion; even with a household income cap of $400,000, the cost would still be around $1.15 trillion. If recipients spend about $400 billion of it within six months, inflation could be pushed up by as much as 0.5 percentage points over the next year.
