Harsh Pant, director of the Observer Research Foundation, said that India's ability to balance the expectations of Iran and its regional neighbors (including the UAE) without alienating its ally, the United States, will be a test of its "diplomatic resolve." Pant said, "We have already seen that the BRICS foreign ministers' meeting earlier this year failed to reach a consensus document, mainly due to differences between the UAE and Iran. Therefore, this kind of disagreement between Iran, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia runs through the BRICS agenda this year." Pant said that this year's situation seems challenging, and India will do its best to push Iran and the UAE to reach an agreement on some issues in order to form a consensus. He stated that both Iran and the UAE have "very strict requirements" regarding what they hope to see in the document, making it a difficult task.
