Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that seasonally adjusted energy inflation in the U.S. rose 2.1% month-over-month in August, compared to a 1.5% decline in July. Specifically, commodity energy inflation rose 4.2% month-over-month, compared to a 2.9% decline in July; gasoline inflation rose 3.9% month-over-month, compared to a 2.9% decline in July; and fuel oil inflation rose 10.1% month-over-month, compared to a 1.7% decline in July. Unadjusted energy inflation rose 16.3% year-over-year in August, compared to a 14.7% increase in July. Specifically, commodity energy inflation rose 28.0% year-over-year, compared to a 24.7% increase in July; gasoline inflation rose 27.4% year-over-year, compared to a 24.6% increase in July; and fuel oil inflation rose 52% year-over-year, compared to a 39.1% increase in July.
