Nikkei reports OpenAI is open to training AI models in Australia and is in
negotiations with authorities over copyright protections. Canberra is seeking a
larger role than mere data-centre hosting and aims to set standards for AI
infrastructure and application deployment; Prime Minister Albanese in July
announced plans to legislate national standards to ensure companies using
Australian creators’ data respect copyright. OpenAI global policy VP Ann O’Leary
told an event at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute in Canberra the
company supports the government’s approach and is interested in onshore model
training.
