CPCA's Cui Dongshu said Aug 2026 China passenger-car retail fell 23% YoY while wholesale fell 5% YoY, leaving retail markedly weaker than wholesale and producing a domestic-weak/external-strong dynamic as exports spike. Industry divergence is intensifying: NEV growth is polarizing — high-end EVs are booming while micro and entry-level models, and county/town demand, are under severe pressure. The short-lived new-car effect has materially weakened sales stimulus. Dealer channels face rising inventory pressure, faster forced destocking, widespread losses and higher operating risk. Structurally, wholesale gains are concentrated in large, high-end A0-, B- and C-segment SUVs; traditional sedans and micro/small MPVs are contracting, widening wholesale-retail divergence. CPCA flagged electrification upgrades and overseas exports as the sector's core long-term growth supports.
