Michael Burry, a prominent short-seller, stated that calls from executives at OpenAI, Anthropic, and other AI companies to slow down the development of AI models are "selfish." Burry listed four reasons: 1. He doesn't believe AI chatbots are the path to artificial general intelligence, therefore there's no reason to limit their progress. 2. Slowing down would benefit existing AI giants and hinder smaller competitors. 3. Calling AI so powerful as to pose an extinction threat fuels hype and stunts, supporting these companies' IPOs. 4. Deliberately slowing down provides cover for a genuine, uncontrollable slowdown in growth. He added that language models like Claude and ChatGPT won't achieve "real reasoning ability," so there's nothing to worry about, at least not now. Burry has criticized and shorted a range of AI companies this year; he has warned of over-investment in AI infrastructure, aggressive accounting practices, hidden debt, and circular transactions.
