India warned a U.S. bill to sanction buyers of Russian oil could damage India-U.S. relations and disrupt global energy markets after the measure passed the House. The bill, already approved by the Senate, grants President Trump authority to impose tariffs on countries purchasing Russian petroleum products and has been sent to him for signature; a White House official said Trump plans to sign in coming days. The new authority could expose the five largest buyers of Russian oil to broad tariffs, including India and U.S. ally Turkey. India’s foreign ministry said it has discussed the issue at senior levels with U.S. counterparts and warned of potential bilateral and market impacts. India is currently the largest buyer of seaborne Russian crude; its refiners are seeking to diversify supplies from the U.S., Brazil, Canada, Venezuela and Africa.
