On Sept 18 local time the Malaysia Pardons Department said former prime minister
Najib Razak will be allowed to serve the remainder of his sentence under house
arrest until August 2028. Najib, who led Malaysia from 2009–2018 and helped
establish 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), was convicted in July 2020 by the
Kuala Lumpur High Court on seven counts including misappropriation and money
laundering in the SRC International case, and was sentenced to 12 years’ prison
and fined RM210 million.
