Politico reports a civil lawsuit filed Friday in the US District Court for the
Northern District of California alleges Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceX AI and Google
inspired by publicly urging coordination to slow AI development. The complaint
cites Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s recent call for “industry‑wide coordination”
to “set the pace,” which plaintiffs say was endorsed by SpaceX AI head Elon
Musk, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis, and
alleges those public appeals amount to an illegal agreement among competitors
under US antitrust law. The suit, filed on behalf of four plaintiffs, seeks to
prevent private industry agreements from determining AI safety policy and urges
that legal guardrails be established transparently by the US government, a
plaintiffs’ lawyer said.
