NATO said German General Karsten Breuer will become chair of its Military
Committee, expected to assume the post in mid-2027, succeeding Italian Navy
Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone. The chair serves as a principal military adviser
to NATO political leadership. The appointment is being read as a sign of
Germany’s rising influence within NATO after substantially increasing defense
spending and military capacity since the Russia-Ukraine war. German Defense
Minister Boris Pistorius said Breuer’s selection reflects allies’ recognition of
Germany’s strengthened contributions to NATO defense.
