On the 21st (local time), after protracted talks EU member states agreed to
extend Russia sanctions for 36 months, prolonging measures targeting more than
3,000 Russian individuals and entities. Two Russian businessmen were removed
from the sanctions list. The extension is longer than the usual 6–12 months
renewals; the EU said the move aims to avoid future renewal deadlock caused by
member-state disagreements.
