Daniel Peters, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania CDU state chair and the party’s top
candidate, announced on the 21st he will resign, saying he will take personal
responsibility for the “heavy defeat.” In the state election held on the 20th
the CDU won 4.9%, failing to clear the 5% threshold and, for the first time,
will not enter the state parliament. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) led with
38.2%; the SPD received 35.5%. The CDU state chair role will be temporarily
filled by Philipp Amthor, Minister of State at the Federal Chancellery
responsible for federal–state relations.
