On the 21st, three people said an agreement about to be signed by the US,
Denmark and Greenland would see the US reactivate the Cold War–era base at
Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland and establish a military presence at Mestersvig
on the east coast. During the Cold War the US operated 17 facilities in
Greenland and deployed more than 10,000 personnel; today it maintains only the
Pituffik Space Base, with about 150 US troops.
