Victoria will prohibit construction of data centers in residential zones and
require them to source their own renewable energy, the state government said.
Developers must add generation to match any incremental demand and pay for grid
upgrades; cooling must use recycled or non‑potable water. Data centers must not
be sited in residential areas and must maintain a mandatory 150‑metre buffer
from homes, the government said.
