A study by Chatham House and the Forest Stewardship Council projects global
biofuel production will surge nearly 70% by 2030 from 2025 levels as major
producers raise mandated blending ratios to offset an Iran-triggered Gulf energy
crisis. Authors warn the demand spike could worsen food-price inflation and
accelerate deforestation, saying short-term policy moves prioritizing energy
security may raise medium-term food-security risks and that additional shocks,
such as extreme weather, would likely push food prices higher.
