The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Oversight Division today released an employee advisory regarding the listing and trading of "event contracts" based on whether an individual utters or "mentions" a specific word, attends or appears at an event, or interacts with a specific person (e.g., betting on how many times Trump will mention the word "Iran" in a public setting). These contracts are commonly referred to as "mentions market" contracts. They carry a high risk of manipulation because their settlement depends on discrete individual actions that are neither necessarily independent nor externally verifiable.
