Adar Raj, joint secretary at India’s Ministry of Power, said coal is expected to
supply roughly half of electricity in fiscal 2035-36 as demand grows. The
government will continue to rely on thermal generation while rapidly scaling
renewables, with priorities to ensure adequate supply and keep power affordable,
sustainable and reliable. Raj said energy security is a national security issue
and India is exploring non-power uses of coal, including coal gasification to
produce hydrocarbons aimed at reducing imports.
