China's deputy UN ambassador Sun Lei told the UN Security Council on the 25th,
during a UNHCR briefing, that political solutions are needed to ease the refugees
crisis, noting protracted, recurrent regional conflicts have produced repeated
humanitarian emergencies. He called on the Security Council to fulfill its
primary responsibility for international peace and security, press parties to
abandon violence and secure an early durable ceasefire, and urged the
international community to promote talks, strengthen humanitarian cooperation
and create conditions for refugees' voluntary, safe and dignified return. Sun
also said parties should comply with international humanitarian law, protect
civilians and civilian infrastructure, and ensure humanitarian aid is not
impeded.
