At the 81st UN General Assembly general debate on Sept. 25, Pakistan Prime
Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan opposes the 'weaponization' of water and
called the Indus river system a lifeline for Pakistan and the region. He accused
India of unilaterally suspending implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty,
saying that step has no legal basis and that international legal mechanisms
uphold Pakistan's position that the treaty remains in force. He warned any
attempt to stop, obstruct or alter Pakistan's entitled river water share would
be treated as an act of war.
