NBC News, citing three U.S. officials, reported an Iranian anti-ship cruise
missile struck a U.S. vessel operating in the Strait of Hormuz on Sept. 14,
injuring eight U.S. Marines. Officials said injuries were largely smoke
inhalation and possible traumatic brain injury—Marines reported concern
symptoms such as headaches; seven were enlisted and one was an officer. The
Marines were part of a battalion landing team conducting operations ashore, were
not aboard a U.S. Navy ship, and returned to duty shortly after the attack. The
Pentagon did not disclose the Sept. 14 incident; the strike and the Marines’
injuries have not been previously reported.
