The two leaders had also spoken by phone several times in the weeks leading up to the meeting. This visit came after Netanyahu exerted significant pressure on the UAE to schedule a meeting before the elections. UAE officials stated that Netanyahu's pressure was "particularly immense," including phone communications, mediation by his aides and international officials, and even hints of future security cooperation. A few days earlier, the two sides had agreed on an earlier date for the visit, and all preparations were complete. The visit was originally planned to be kept secret until after the meeting, but was cancelled at the last minute. An informed source stated, "Everything was ready, the delegation was organized, but we received the cancellation notice shortly before takeoff."
