Spain, Portugal and Luxembourg urge the EU to adopt a 2040 renewable-energy
target to reduce reliance on energy imports, citing geopolitical uncertainty and
risks such as a Strait of Hormuz blockade. In a letter to EU Energy Commissioner
Dan Jørgensen, the three energy ministers said the bloc should accelerate the
shift away from fossil fuels and speed deployment and integration of renewables.
The appeal comes as the EU frames long-term energy goals toward climate
neutrality by 2050; the bloc plans clean energy to make up 42.5% of final energy
use by 2030, while some members — including Spain at 48% — have set higher
national targets.
