Statistics Canada’s preliminary industry-based real GDP estimate showed growth
of 0.2% in August as gains in mining and quarrying partly offset a decline in
oil and gas extraction. July was unchanged and June’s monthly growth was revised
up to 0.4% from 0.3%. After a strong Q2 rebound, the data point to a soft start
to Q3, and Statistics Canada flagged U.S. tariffs and import bans as risks that
could weigh on the economy in H2.
