At a Sept. 30 briefing, Zhang Han, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan
Affairs Office, said Beijing firmly opposes Taiwan independence and blamed the
Lai Ching‑te administration for persistently pursuing independence and refusing
to accept the 1992 Consensus. He called those actions the primary cause of
instability in the Taiwan Strait and said opposing independence and preserving
cross‑strait peace are in the common interests of China and the United States.
Zhang urged Taiwan residents to reject pro-independence moves, help maintain
stability in the strait, and support advancement of national reunification.
