Nikkei reports Toshiba plans to double mechanical hard-disk (HDD) capacity for AI data centers by FY2027, investing about ¥60 billion to expand a Philippines plant to stabilize supply of key components. The move is the company's first large-scale HDD investment in roughly five years. Toshiba will add production lines and roll out higher-density drives that can boost single-disk capacity by up to 40%. It says it will continue capital spending with a target to mass-produce 65TB-class drives by 2030 and eventually 100TB-class drives. SSDs are faster but cost roughly 20x more than HDDs, and tight storage-chip supply is further supporting HDD demand.
