White House National Economic Council Director Hassett said Sunday he doesn't believe recent polls showing Americans have a negative view of the economy. "Before the election cycle, some polling organizations, which may be partisan, told us that people were very, very frustrated. That's typical Democratic rhetoric, and I simply don't believe it," Hassett said on CNN's "State of the Union." He added, "Because if that were true, if these polls had any value in judging consumer sentiment, then we should look at the consumer data and say, 'Oh my god, yes, that's right. People aren't spending much.' But in reality, retailers are doing very well." A recent Quinnipiac University poll showed that 62% of respondents disapproved of Trump's handling of the economy. Another survey conducted by the Associated Press/NORC Research Center found that 65% of respondents believed Trump's policies were the main cause of high prices. More than half of the respondents in that poll also said that the national economy and the overall state of the United States have worsened since Trump returned to the White House. Trump's overall approval rating is also quite low, at only 38.5% on Sunday morning, according to the Decision Desk HQ polling average.
