For AI like Codex and Claude, simply stating the "worth in dollars" of a subscription plan without considering specific use cases is meaningless. A more reasonable understanding is that your monthly subscription fee buys you a certain number of "credits." Using different models and processing different types of tokens consumes different amounts of credits. The credit consumption ratio between these combinations can vary significantly from their API price ratio. Therefore, how cost-effective a plan is depends on the models you use and the tasks you run. For example, with the $200/month Claude plan, changing the model or task type will change the value of its usage credits based on the API price. Understanding this is crucial for meaningful comparisons of different subscription plans. For instance, in typical agent task scenarios, Anthropic and OpenAI's equivalent plans offer roughly equivalent usage credits for Fable and Astra, respectively. However, comparing Opus 5.5 and Sol 6.1 yields significantly different results. This is partly because OpenAI halved the API equivalent value of its Pro200 plan last week. However, even before this adjustment, the API equivalent value provided by OpenAI was inferior to that of Anthropic. Currently, a comparison of the two companies' subscription plans shows that in any Claude plan, using Opus 5.5 or Sonnet 5.5, the API equivalent value per dollar spent is far higher than all of OpenAI's subscription plans.
