BHP has agreed to sell its idled Kambalda nickel concentrator in Western
Australia, together with a package of mining tenements and mineral rights, to
South Africa's Gold Fields. The undisclosed-value deal is expected to complete
in 2027. The Kambalda plant was mothballed in 2024. BHP mothballed larger WA
nickel operations the same year citing market oversupply and is assessing
disposal of remaining nickel assets, including a nickel refinery, a smelter and
mining operations. Gold Fields said it will assess options for long-term use of
the concentrator.
