OpenAI and Anthropic are locked in fierce competition, with one holding a significant advantage in consumer spending across various US states. YipitData compiled data on artificial intelligence spending based on consumer credit and debit card data from June to August. Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz released this data for the first time on Monday in its "Top 100 Generative AI Consumer Applications" report. The data shows that OpenAI currently holds a clear lead. YipitData found that consumers in 47 US states spent more on OpenAI products than on Anthropic. Only in Massachusetts, Montana, and California did consumers spend more on Claude than on OpenAI. Furthermore, Anthropic also outspent OpenAI in Washington, D.C. OpenAI accounted for over 70% of AI consumer spending in at least eight states. Delaware showed the strongest preference for OpenAI, at 82%; followed by Alaska (74%), Kentucky (71%), Louisiana (71%), Mississippi (77%), North Dakota (71%), New Mexico (70%), and West Virginia (72%). ChatGPT and Claude differ in their product positioning. Two studies from 2025 found that ChatGPT is better suited for enhanced applications, while Claude is better suited for automated tasks. Furthermore, among the two chatbots, ChatGPT is the only one with image generation capabilities.
