Broadcom has been seeking more than $50 bln in financing in recent weeks to fund
development of custom AI chips for OpenAI, the Wall Street Journal reports,
citing people familiar with the matter. Private equity firms including Apollo
and Blackstone have held talks about participating; negotiations are at an early
stage and the financing size could be adjusted. The raise could cover production
capacity of several GW of OpenAI‑specific chips and could close as early as
year‑end, the report says. OpenAI internally calls the program Nexus; first- and
second‑generation chips are codenamed Jalapeño and Serrano. Broadcom and OpenAI
previously announced plans for a 10 GW custom chip system to be deployed from H2
2026 through end-2029.
