The annual International Quantitative Investment Championship (ICI) was held in Singapore this week, providing a window into how AI is reshaping the hedge fund industry. Students from 13 countries participated this week, vying for a total prize pool of $100,000 and opportunities to work in the industry. This year, over 156,000 students worldwide registered, nearly double the number from last year. Organizers attributed the surge in registrations in part to AI, as the available tools made the competition more accessible. Notably, individual entries increased by over 75,000 compared to last year, while team entries only increased by about 1,000. Organizers believe this also reflects the changes brought about by the widespread adoption of AI: individuals can now independently complete tasks that previously required an entire research team. Artificial intelligence also helps lower the financial and technical barriers to entry into the quantitative investment industry, enabling participation from more diverse backgrounds. This year's competition also reflected this trend: the proportion of participants from Africa rose from 4% in 2023 to 28%, and the proportion of female participants increased from 18% last year to 26%.
