Romanian leu hit record lows amid ongoing political turmoil, and the National Bank of Romania is expected to keep its benchmark rate at 6.5% — the highest in the EU. A poll showed all economists surveyed forecast the NBR will leave rates unchanged on Thursday. Policymakers have paused policy for more than two years despite recurring government instability, double‑digit inflation and an economic contraction. Romania is still trying to form a functioning government after the prior cabinet fell in May over measures to address one of the EU’s largest fiscal deficits; multiple coalition attempts have failed.
