Codelco said a mudslide driven by severe weather in central Chile struck the
open‑pit Cráter Norte area of its El Teniente mine at about 1400 local time on
Sunday, trapping two workers. Three workers were in the area; one was rescued
and taken to hospital, the locations of the other two have been identified and
rescue operations are ongoing. The incident follows a fatal accident at another
Codelco‑operated mine less than two weeks ago. The episode is the latest setback
for Chile, the world’s largest copper producer, which is contending with output
declines, operational disruptions and rising labor tensions while copper trades
near record highs.
