French authorities said on the 12th that hundreds of supermarkets nationwide
suffered a large-scale cyberattack on the night of the 11th, causing widespread
spoilage of fresh and frozen products. Hackers exploited a vulnerability in a
refrigeration control system used by many retailers, remotely activating a
forced-defrost function and setting temperatures to 50°C, leaving equipment
heating for several hours and unable to maintain required cold storage. Industry
sources estimate losses nationwide could reach several million euros.
