Broadcom CEO Hock Tan stated at a DBS Bank conference in Singapore on Monday that breakthroughs in AI will keep chip investment demand high for at least the next two years, with current production capacity far from meeting demand, and the shortage may worsen in the future. Intel CEO Li-Wu Chen, also present at the conference, believes that hardware supply shortages will continue for another two to three years.
Regarding OpenAI, Tan stated that the market has misunderstood the company; its fundamentals remain solid, and $50 billion in annualized revenue "isn't bad in itself." He also disagreed with the view that OpenAI's valuation is too high, stating that investors who sell based on a single short-term data point are "almost gambling in a casino" because they lack understanding of the company and have unrealistic expectations.
Tan pointed out that if OpenAI and Anthropic's products are widely adopted, their bargaining power during fundraising will be significantly enhanced; however, he also cautioned that high global interest rates could constrain future growth due to funding needs. He believes the real key lies in whether leading AI companies can develop models that create sufficient value and returns to justify large-scale investment. He also criticized most companies' spending on tokens as wasteful, like children spending money in an arcade.
