Ateq Garallah, CEO of the Mohammad Center for Strategic Studies, stated that the near-term developments in the Yemeni war depend on whether government forces can hold onto recaptured positions, secure the Straits of Hormuz and connecting roads, and eliminate the Houthi threat from the highlands. If these conditions are met, the balance of military and political pressure may shift, but this will not necessarily end the Houthi maritime threat. However, if the Yemeni government forces' advance stalls in insurmountable positions, and the Houthis can continue their missile and drone counterattacks, the situation could degenerate into a protracted stalemate. A war of attrition could have devastating humanitarian and economic consequences not only for Yemen but for the entire region. The risk of escalation and regional war could still push the parties to seek understanding or arrangements to cease fighting. However, translating military progress into a solution requires addressing broader political and security issues, including power-sharing arrangements, mutual assurances, and the security of maritime routes. In other words, the current coastal fighting may be a turning point in the overall course of the Yemeni crisis, rather than another round of protracted conflict.
