China-led research published online in Science on the 16th shows dendritic branches within a single neuron can perform key computations underpinning higher cognition, challenging the view of neurons as simple network nodes, Xu Ninglong, a researcher at the Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, said. The team says the finding indicates single-neuron mechanisms can support flexible behavior and could inform AI designs based on multi-compartment dendritic computation.

He added the UK remains the fastest-growing G7 economy. Sector details show consumer-facing services output fell 0.3% for a second month, information & communications output dropped 0.5%, and construction contracted 0.2% for a fourth month. Employment is down about 95,000. Raja said sustained energy prices are squeezing household incomes and higher interest rates are weighing on consumption and investment, though overall the economy remains resilient.
