On the 17th Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae, in her capacity as prime minister,
presented a masakaki offering at Yasukuni Shrine, which enshrines Class-A World
War II convicted war criminals. Several senior politicians — including the
minister responsible for economic and fiscal policy and the speakers of the
lower and upper houses — also presented masakaki. Fujita Takakage, chair of the
Murayama Statement Inheritance and Development Association, said he strongly
opposes politicians visiting or making offerings at Yasukuni, called the acts
absurd and wrong, and urged Japanese society to uphold the spirit of the
Murayama Statement.
