According to the Wall Street Journal, a typical four-person household, as defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, using a moderate-cost food spending plan, saw its food expenses increase by 4.6% in August compared to January 2025. Since last year, the price of ground beef in the U.S. has risen from $5.55 per pound to $6.79, primarily due to a shrinking U.S. cattle herd and severe drought deteriorating pasture conditions. Milk and chicken breast prices also rose slightly during the same period. However, egg prices have fallen from $4.95 per dozen in January of last year to $2.27 per dozen. Egg prices were high in January 2025 due to the death of millions of hens from avian influenza. Bread prices have also declined slightly compared to a year ago. Data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that since January 2025, overall food prices have risen by 4.4%, exceeding the overall annual inflation rate.
