Intel has applied to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission for an exemption
from a recent ban on foreign-made advanced robotic equipment, saying certain
devices are essential to U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and lack validation
domestic replacements. In a filing dated Oct. 16 and made public Monday, Intel
warned its automated guided vehicles (AGVs), used for in‑fab material transport,
could fall under rules banning the import and sale of foreign advanced robotics.
Intel said replacing the equipment would take years and that any operational
interruption would immediately reduce its U.S. semiconductor production
capacity, calling continued operation vital to national security.
