National Democratic organizations sued President Trump and the U.S. Department
of Justice on Tuesday, alleging the administration is coordinating actions
intended to undermine public confidence in the upcoming U.S. midterms by
pressing states on ballot handling. The complaint says the government has
asked California, Nevada and other states to pause processing ballots suspected
of involving non-citizens and to set aside tens of thousands of mailed ballots
until citizenship can be verified. Filed in Washington by the Democratic
Senatorial Campaign Committee and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee,
the suit argues that the federal data the requests rely on is "low-quality" and often
erroneous. Plaintiffs ask the court to rule the government’s demands and threats
violate separation of powers, infringe states’ authority over elections, and to
enjoin the administration from continuing the actions.
