According to Iran's Tasnim News Agency on October 21, Gulf states attempted to find alternatives to the undersea internet cables in the Strait of Hormuz through related projects, but these efforts have failed. Currently, over 90% of global intercontinental digital traffic, including financial transactions, diplomatic communications, military data, and the daily web browsing traffic of billions of users, is transmitted via undersea fiber optic cables. In the Middle East, this global internet infrastructure is highly centralized and vulnerable because most of the cables pass through two extremely risky maritime chokepoints: the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea leading to Egypt's Suez Canal.
