RIO will invest $1.9bn to develop the Kangwinan bauxite project in northern Australia to replace output from depleting Andoom and Gove mines. First ore is planned for 2029; RIO said northern Queensland bauxite capacity will rise to 44.0 mln t/yr from 38.0 mln t/yr. The bauxite will be refined to aluminum and shipped to smelters for aluminum production. RIO’s aluminum and lithium CEO said the project reflects the group's long-term commitment to its bauxite business.
