The US administration announced exemptions to a 50% tariff on certain Canadians
imports — including blueberries, potatoes, apples, seaweed, plastic crates,
packaging materials, refrigeration equipment and packaging machinery — that were
imposed after US‑Canada trade talks collapsed at the end of August. The White
House simultaneously increased duties on selected valves, carpets and waste
products to offset some of the revenue loss. Officials said the adjustment
clarifies the scope of Canada‑targeted tariffs. The change comes ahead of the
Nov. 3 midterm elections; Maine Senator Susan Collins said she secured
exemptions for local agricultural producers.
