Maslennikov, director of the foreign ministry’s European Affairs Department,
said Moscow is adopting retaliatory measures in response to Western detentions
of ships in the Baltic and that measures could be asymmetric. He accused NATO
and EU members of arbitrarily detaining vessels sailing under standard rules,
calling the actions maritime extortion, and gave no details on the
countermeasures.
