Berenberg analyst Andrew Wishart said in a note investors expect the UK government to continue lowering the public debt-to-GDP ratio in Wednesday’s budget. The narrow 2yr-10yr gilt yield spread reflects market pricing for fiscal prudence. Wishart warned that if Chancellor John Healey announces government borrowing above market expectations, UK government bond yields could rise sharply.

A foreign exchange and commodities positioning report released by Saxo Bank on October 26 showed that, as of the week ending October 20, speculators' total long positions in the US dollar fell 11% to $40 billion, but remained at historically high levels. During the same period, the Bloomberg Dollar Index fell 0.4%, indicating the dollar's failure to sustain its strength, and crowded long positions faced the risk of concentrated liquidation due to changes in the macroeconomic environment. In commodities, speculative funds were net sellers for the sixth consecutive week, with the Bloomberg Commodity Index falling 8% cumulatively during the same period. The sell-off was concentrated in natural gas, metals, and grains. Henry Hub natural gas futures speculative net short positions increased to 124,000 contracts, a two-and-a-half-year high; silver net long positions fell to 3,746 contracts, a 32-month low. Grain speculative net long positions fell 42% over the past four weeks, while raw sugar net long positions bucked the trend, rising to a five-year high. Saxo Bank pointed out that extreme positioning could be a contrarian indicator, but a market reversal still requires fundamental or technical catalysts.
