AI developer Anthropic told investors in its S-1 that climate change and
environmental issues are risk factors, citing the large power supply and
infrastructure needed to operate. It warned the physical impacts of climate
change could raise operating costs over time, saying higher average temperatures
may increase electricity consumption and water use for equipment cooling.
Anthropic also noted heightened scrutiny from advocacy groups, communities,
regulators and investors, and that some U.S. states are considering moratoria on
new data centers to assess environmental and power-price impacts — opposition
that could harm the company’s reputation. The disclosure contrasts with SpaceX’s
S-1, which initially omitted climate risk and was later amended to add water
scarcity as a risk factor.
